About Carol Ballenger

Carol works in the landscape, both rural and urban, and produces archival quality, signed, limited edition photographs in her studio. She has exhibited widely and is a member of MAKE Southwest and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

She sees her work as meditations on the environment and often uses colour as an element of expression in its own right to emphasise the character of the image. Carol feels that her background in conventional photography has enabled her to make the most of digital technology by incorporating the skills learned in the darkroom. Her "Tree of Life" image was selected for Digital 2010 : Planet Earth - the 12th international Digital Print Exhibition at the New York Hall of Science and also shown at the Science Museum, London.

Before moving to Devon in 1980, Carol worked in London as a professional violinist. She is an Associate of the Royal College of Music and studied music at Dartington College of Arts, Converse College, SC, USA, The Royal College of Music, London and the Institut des Hautes Etudes Musicales, Montreux. She was a member of the Royal Ballet and English National Ballet orchestras and also worked as a freelance violinist in London, playing with various groups including the Academy of the BBC, Bournemouth Symphony, Richard Hickox and Max Jaffa Orchestras.

As a musician and founder of Arts Live, Carol promotes various projects including live performances combining projected images, poetry and music. For latest news and to find out what forthcoming events Carol will be involved in see News & Events.

In 2003 she took part in Landscapes, a series of programmes looking at art and landscape, produced by John Loveless for Carlton Television.
