PREFACE

Dimentions . . . for Marcel

Watch,
No ordinary sky
Slide indifferent,
Slowly down
Chromatic scales.
Reduce the tones
To glacier blue and
A long and sonorous
Umbral charcoal;
Diminuendo.
Three dimensions
Become two,
Lime ridge silhouette.
The last rooks, distant;
Cursive, inked characters
Moving, calligraphic
Across and down
The blue page,
Emptied.
Mood and landscape,
Defining times of peace
When even
Our own noise
Stills
For a moment
Silence is a yardstick
By which other things
Are measured.

The vast structures
Of recollection.
